Poker – A Strategic Game

Combining skill, psychology, and chance, poker is a highly strategic card game. Whether you play Draw Poker, Stud Poker, Texas Hold’em or any other variant, understanding the hand rankings, betting tactics, and bluffing strategies is essential to your success in winning. Whether you’re just getting involved in friendly poker nights or aiming for professional tournaments, by exploring different variants and mastering the rules, you are guaranteed to enjoy countless hours of excitement.

The Basics of Poker

Typically played with 2 to 7 players, and preferably 6 or 7 – though ‘heads-up accommodates just two players and some variants more that seven.

Generally, poker is played for money, with poker chips replacing cash during the game. Players buy their chips before playing and then cash them out afterwards.

A poker game revolves in a clockwise direction around the table, and uses a standard 52-card deck with the jokers removed.

From highest to lowest, poker card rankings are A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2, but in some poker variants the ace can serve as the lowest card with the King then becoming the highest. Suits are always equal in value.

How a Poker Game Operates

Prior to any games, players agree on the poker variant and the stakes. Online poker platforms and casinos set them in advance, while poker night games may involve discussions. General factors to consider include:

The betting limits: fixed, pot-limit, or no-limit; the initial amount required to play (antes or blinds); and rules on raising and re-raising the stakes.

Once the general rules of play have been agreed, a dealer is chosen randomly, and the cards are shuffled and cut before dealing. In some games, the dealer rotates around the table, determining who acts as the dealer for each round. The game proceeds with betting rounds, where players can check, bet, call, raise, or fold. The round ends when all active players have bet the same amount or only one remains.

An initial bet is placed by each player if required.
The dealer then distributes the cards.
Players review their hands, each making the decision whether to bet, call, raise, or fold.
Betting then continues in rounds, with some poker variants involving additional cards or exchanges.

The game ends in one of two ways:
1. A showdown, where the best five card hand wins the pot.
2. A player winning by making all opponents fold.

If multiple players remain after the final betting round, they reveal their hands, and the best five-card hand wins.

If a player bets and all others fold, that player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Bluffing is a key element of poker. Convincing others to fold when your hand is poor and getting others to bet higher when you are holding a strong one are the marks of a good poker player.

Poker Hand Rankings

Poker hands always consist of five cards. When a game allows players more than five cards, they must choose the best five to keep.

The standard ranking from highest to lowest poker hands is:

 A Straight Flush 
Five consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., A-K-Q-J-10, called a Royal Flush).

 Four of a Kind 
Four cards of the same rank (e.g., 9-9-9-9-Q).

 A Full House 
Three of one rank and a pair of another (e.g., 5-5-5-K-K).

 A Flush 
Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.

 A Straight 
Five consecutive cards of any suit.

 Three of a Kind 
Three cards of the same rank.

 Two Pair 
Two cards of one rank and two of another.

 One Pair 
Two cards of the same rank.

 High Card 
No matching ranks or sequences; the highest card winning.

If two players have the same hand ranking, the highest ranking individual cards then determine the winner.

POKER VARIANTS

Stud Poker

In Stud Poker, over multiple betting rounds, players are dealt a mix of face-up and face-down cards.

Five Card Stud Poker: Players are dealt one face-down “hole” card and one face-up card, followed by a betting round. Additional face-up cards are dealt, with a betting round after each deal, until players each have five cards. The player with the best five-card hand wins.
Seven Card Stud Poker: Each player receives two “hole” cards and one face-up card. Betting rounds then follow as more cards are dealt – four face-up, and one final card face-down. The best five-card hand wins.

Stud Poker variants include:
Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Poker (Eight or Better): The pot is split between the highest and lowest hands, an accepted ‘low hand’ must have five cards each ranked 8 or lower.
Razz Poker: A version of Seven Card Stud, in which the lowest hand wins.

Draw Poker

One of the oldest and most recognizable ‘saloon’ poker games, Five Card Draw begins with each player being dealt a private five-card hand. After reviewing their cards, a round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer. If all players check, the cards are discarded, and a new deal begins with another ante.

However, if betting occurs, players may then discard and replace any number of cards. A second betting round then follows, starting with the player who opened the first round, or if they folded, the next active player. If multiple players then remain, there is a showdown.

Variants of Draw Poker include:
Joker Wild Draw Poker: A 53-card deck is used, with the joker as a wild card or a “bug”, usable only as an ace or to complete a straight or flush hand.
Jacks or Better Draw Poker: A player must have at least a pair of jacks to open the betting.
Lowball (Low Poker) Draw Poker: Follows the same format as Five Card Draw, but the lowest-ranked hand wins, with the best possible hands depending on the agreed rules:
If aces are low and straights/flushes don’t count, the best hand is 5-4-3-2-A (also known as a “wheel”).
If straights/flushes count, the best hand is 7-5-4-3-2 (no pairs).

Shared Card Poker

In Shared Card Poker or Community Card Poker games, some cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table, shared by all the players.

Texas Hold’em Poker: Players receive two private “hole cards”, using them along with five shared community cards to form the best five-card hand. Betting occurs after the flop (three community cards), turn (fourth card), and river (fifth card).
Omaha Poker: Similar to Texas Hold’em, but with players receiving four hole cards and they must use exactly two hole cards with three community cards to form a hand.
Omaha Hi-Lo Poker (Eight or Better): The pot is split between the best high and low hands, with the low hand requiring five unpaired cards that rank 8 or lower.

Mixed and Rotational Games

Dealer’s Choice Poker: Each dealer decides on their own preferred variant before the hand begins.
H.O.R.S.E. Poker: A structured rotation of five poker variants: Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo.

Handling Irregularities

Fairness and minimal game disruption are the key principles of poker rules.

Significant Action: Once two players have bet, raised, checked, or folded, the hand must continue.
Misdeals: If an error occurs during an initial deal, such as the wrong number of cards, a player missed etc, the hand is redealt, unless ‘significant action’ (see above) has already taken place.
Exposed Cards: Any accidentally revealed card by a player must then be shown to all players.
Cheating & Collusion: Players must play independently, without helping others. Playing to benefit another player (collusion) is considered cheating.
Hand Protection: Players must keep their hole cards private and separate from the discard pile (“muck”). If any hand should touch the discard pile, it is automatically considered to be folded.
Out-of-Turn Action: A player who acts prematurely is committed to that action once his or her turn arrives.

Normally played with 2 – 7 players, ideally six or seven, but 2 player games are also common.
