What are the professional rules governing the use of golf ball markers?
In professional tournaments, a golf ball marker must always be an artificial object and cannot be natural items such as a stone or a leaf. Each player must ensure that his golf ball marker is placed accurately, in order that the ball may be replaced in its original spot, with improper marking potentially resulting in a penalty.
In a professional tournament, what objects can be used as golf ball markers?
A player can use various artificial objects as golf ball markers. A golf tee or a coin are common examples of everyday objects used as golf ball markers. The important thing is that the object must be artificial and must be of a size and shape that allows the player to accurately replace their ball in its original spot.
Are there size restrictions for golf ball markers?
According to the USGA and R&A rules, the maximum size for a golf ball marker is 1.5″ (3.8 cm) in diameter. Furthermore, golf ball markers with alignment aids must be less than 1″ (2.5 cm) in height and less than 2″ (5 cm) wide in any direction.
Who is allowed to place a ball marker in golf?
The Rules of Golf state that a player, his partner (in a best-ball match or similar) or another person authorized by the player may place a ball marker.
The marked ball must then be replaced by the player, the player’s partner, or the person who lifted the ball, but nobody else. However, regardless of who marks or replaces the ball, it is the player of the ball who is responsible for any violations of the rules.
What reasons permit a golfer to place a ball marker?
Under the the official Rules of Golf, there are a number of situations that allow a player to place a ball marker and lift their ball. These are:
• Marking a ball on the green when another player is away.
• Marking a ball on the green if a player wants to clean it.
• When a player is unsure if a ball is his, he may mark and lift the ball to examine it.
• If a ball is cut or otherwise damaged, he may mark the ball, lift it, examine the damage, and if the ball is not fit for play, he may replace it.
• When play is suspended due to bad weather, a player may place a ball marker to record its position.
What are the penalties for improper use of golf ball markers in tournaments?
If a player uses an improper ball marker in a tournament it can result in a General Penalty – the loss of the hole in match play, or alternatively, two strokes in stroke play.
If any marking alignment device exceeds the specified dimensions, the infringing player’s first violation will incur a penalty, while a second violation may lead to complete disqualification.
Are golf ball marker rules different for professional and amateur golfers?
The rules for golf ball markers are generally the same in amateur tournaments as they are for professional ones, being governed by the same official ‘Rules of Golf’. However, it is generally the case that professionals will face a more strict degree of enforcement of these rules, and a greater likelihood of receiving penalties for any violations in comparison to amateur players.
A Brief History of Golf Ball Markers
