THE HISTORY OF GOLF TEES

When were golf tees invented?

Prior to the invention of the golf tee in the 1800s, golfers used mounds of sand to elevate the ball as far back as the 16th century. Small heaps of sand or dirt were deposited at each hole for use by golfers.

In 1744, the first rules of golf were written down, stating that the ball must be "teed" from the ground. Players were allowed to build a sand mound within a specified distance from the previous hole.

The first portable golf tee was patented in 1889 by Scottish golfers William Bloxsom and Arthur Douglas, featuring a small rubber slab with iron prongs, designed to be rested flat on the ground with a raised portion to support the ball.

In 1892, Percy Ellis created the first golf tee designed to penetrate the ground, which he named the "Perfectum".

A few years later in 1899, Dr. George Franklin Grant patented the wooden tee, marking a significant advancement in golf tee design. However, unlike modern tees, it had a flat head. Grant preferred to gave his wooden tees away to friends instead of marketing them to a wider audience.

A widespread use of tees came in the 1920s with the introduction of the "Reddy Tee" created by William Lowell in 1925, which improved the game significantly with its concave top to cradle the ball. Due to it being mass-produced and marketed well, it gained widespread adoption throughout the golfing community.

Nowadays, golf tees are made from various materials, including wood, plastic, and even biodegradable options, with golf tee designs allowing for more consistent ball placement and improved driving distance, thereby significantly influenced modern golfing techniques. The evolution from sand mounds to modern tees, such as the Reddy Tee, has enabled golfers to achieve more accurate and powerful drives, better accuracy and control in their swings.

It featured a concave top that cradled the ball, making it easier to use. This design was heavily marketed and gained popularity through endorsements from professional golfers.
